Special Supplemental Nutrition Programs for Women,
Infant, and Children (WIC):
WIC is a federally funded program for pregnant women, new mothers, infants,
and children under age 5 that provides vouchers for food, referrals to health
and social services, breastfeeding education and support, and nutrition
education through individual counseling and classes. Vouchers are issued for
foods that are high in protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C. Breast
pumps are also available for breastfeeding mothers.
Eligibility: Parents, stepparents, guardians, and foster parents of infants and
children under the age of five can apply for their children. Applicants must
meet income guidelines (fall at least at or below 185% of the US Poverty Income
Guidelines), a state residency requirement, and be individually determined to be
at nutrition risk. Examples of nutrition risk include medically based risk, such
as anemia, underweight, history of
pregnancy complications, and diet-based risk, such as inadequate diet.
