With an increased demand for our services, Child Inc continued to expand and diversify funding in the most recent fiscal year ended. Total support and revenue grew to over $20 million as it continued its services to the children of Travis County and is expected to be maintained at least at this funding level through the next full federal budgeting cycle.
The organization employed over 230 people in Travis County, with the vast majority of the staff being direct care professionals to our children. Funding for Child Inc administration and programs came from grants and contracts with federal,
state, county, city, corporations, individuals, and special events. Over 98% of the funding is from public funds.
Form 990s
As a 501(c)(3) organization,
Child Inc files a Form 990 each year with the IRS after the end of our fiscal year. This return provides detailed financial data, a listing of annual expenses and sources of revenue, and other information about our organization. Child Inc shares information about operations and
finances with GuideStar, the leading source of information on US nonprofits. GuideStar is a searchable database of more than 1.7 million IRS-recognized nonprofit organizations. For independently verified information about Child Inc's finances, including our current and past 990s, please visit Child Inc's records on www.guidestar.org.
Audits
Child Inc engages an independent certified public accounting firm, currently Atchley & Associates LLP, to conduct an annual examination of the organization's books, records, and fiscal policies and procedures. The auditors present the audited financial statements to the Child Inc Executive Committee annually. Child Inc has received an unqualified opinion from its auditors for its last fiscal year audit (as it has since its inception), with no questions, significant deficiencies, or material weaknesses cited. To view a copy of our audit, please contact our CFO, Huey G. Long at (512)451-7361.
Because the majority of our funding is from federal grants, we are subject to a statutory requirement to have oversight reviews of our funded programs. These monitoring reviews must be conducted every 3 years for existing programs and after the first year for new programs. Our last oversight review resulted in no findings which were not immediately improvable or allowed to be improved within a time frame.
Financial Management
Child Inc manages more than 13 different budgets with nine funding sources including federal, state, county, and city agencies. Collectively, these budgets accounted for an operating budget of more than $20 million during the current fiscal year ended.
Child Inc’s financial management staff is highly experienced in reviewing billings and tracking reimbursements. Our financial accounting department has a direct staff of six with support from the other service departments. Child Inc’s Chief Financial Officer, Huey G. Long, is a licensed CPA with a strong auditing background and is responsible for the direct oversight of the accounting staff.
