What We Do
The Basics
- Provide early childhood education to over 2,000 preschool children ages 0-5 each year
- Employ quality staff and conduct extensive and ongoing training
- Use scientifically supported training curricula and teaching methods
- Educate parents about child development
- Provide support services to children and families
The Critical Additions
Increase parent involvement
- In the classrooms so there is increased adult-child interaction
- Through parent-child homework assignments to increase parent-child interaction
- Involve dads, both in-home and out-of-home dads, for male role modeling, additional parenting, and greater financial support
Educate dads about the importance of fatherhood
- Through our weekly call-in radio show (The Dad Show) designed for “dads and anyone who has ever had a dad”
Assess parental problems
- Have all mothers complete the National Depression Screening instrument to identify parents who may need help and to assess the quality of parent-child interaction
- Train staff on indicators of child attachment problems so intervention efforts may be pursued when indicated
Train parents on healthy relationships
- Offer relationship workshops to Head Start and other low-income couples or individuals to encourage marriage, maintain marriages, and improve their relationships for the ultimate purpose of the child’s well-being
- Educate the community-at-large about the importance of positive parenting and recognize and reward those parents who are examples of outstanding parents. Parent nominees are identified by several agencies, in addition to Child Inc, and are selected for recognition and rewards by the business community
Track and study our children and families through extensive assessments and relate these findings to the most current neuroscience research on brain and learning development
The Early Childhood Development program provides comprehensive services to children and families, including early childhood education, mental health services, disabilities services, nutritional services, medical and dental services, social services and parent-engagement activities. These services are delivered through 16 centers, public school pre-k classrooms, and other collaborative childcare sites and in-home services.
Child Inc provides parent education and parent engagement opportunities with the goal of assisting parents in improving their family circumstances in order to improve their child’s chances for school and life success, and to learn the parenting skills they will need after leaving Child Inc to continue to support their child. We recognize the correlation between self-sufficiency and successful child-outcomes. Children entering our program are on average 19 months developmentally delayed. These children in our program are able to progress and meet or exceed national norms before entering preschool or kindergarten.
