ISD Visiting Teacher Program

The Visiting Teacher Program is a partnership between local ISDs and Child Inc in several Pre-K classrooms throughout the county. The Visiting Teacher Program provides services to low-income families whose children attend Pre-K. This program is designed to serve as a liaison between home and school. Through home visits and classroom observations and interactions the Visiting Teacher is the vital link for achieving this goal. A major emphasis is placed on teaching the parents how to be responsible for their child’s education on an ongoing basis throughout their child’s academic life.

The Visiting Teacher's workday is divided into two specific areas. The first is the classroom where she spends four hours each morning, under the supervision of the classroom teacher, guiding the children through educational activities such as math, reading and comprehension, writing and language skills. The second area is the home visit where the Visiting Teacher and parent meet to discuss their child's development, address parenting concerns, provide homework activities that will reinforce the child's learning, and deal with any social services need the family may have.

As a Head Start Program, enrolled families are provided with services in the areas of health, social support, mental health and nutrition. Our ability to connect with the families depends on the Visiting Teacher who helps the families identify areas of need and then works with the families to set realistic goals. The parents of the enrolled children meet with a Visiting Teacher twice a month. Visits will generally last 30-45 minutes. Visits can take place in the home or school at a time that is convenient for the parents and the Visiting Teaching. The Visiting Teacher Program follows the ISD school program year.

Classrooms are selected annually by ISD's and Child Inc based upon perceived need and available resources. Parents with Pre-K children should check with their school regarding the availability of the program.
