Health Services

In order for children to reach their full potential as learners, they must be healthy, in “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (from the preamble to the Constitution of the World Health Organization). The Health Component/Health Services is responsible for the physical, dental, and nutritional health and well-being of children.

Child Inc Health Services supports this comprehensive view of health and is, therefore, committed to implementing and supporting a comprehensive vision of health as the foundation for cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development for each child.

Research studies verify the powerful relationships between family life-styles and children’s development. Socio-economic status affects health-status; therefore, our families and children are at greater risk for current and future health-related problems. Additionally, children’s health problems can add to the number and intensity of family stressors, thereby leading to more negative life styles. The child’s development in all areas can become the victim. Health Services maintains an effective, service-driven system to advance development and learning:

  • Prevention (Building a healthy foundation): Upon enrollment, children are examined by doctors and dentists, have vision and hearing checked and immunizations updated, and receive a developmental screening. Professionals look for life-style-related conditions (such as early trauma or chaos that will impact development and learning. Referrals are made as needed.

  • Early intervention (Keeping kids healthy; reducing the need and demand for health-care): Children learn healthy self-help skills, and nutrition staff assure that meals are nutritious, as well as tasty. Special diets are accommodated. Health staff work with parents and children together to plan and implement improvement strategies and active, on-going participation to maximize individual potential. Health staff also coordinate with other Child Inc components for a fully –comprehensive approach.

  • Individualization (Custom-designing plans): On-going research in the field of neuroscience has lead to innovative understandings of the relationship between the mind and body, which, in turn, has led to new ways of enhancing health, development, and learning (such as nutrition therapy, neurofeedback training, heart rate variability, stress/regulation etc…).
